Blockade Kamp Zeist puts a hold on construction family prison for refugees for a day
November 26 2015: Blockade Kamp Zeist puts a hold on construction family prison for refugees for a dayPress release - Anarchist Anti-deportation Group Utrecht Utrecht, November 26, 2015 - From 6 to 12 o'clock this morning activists of the Anarchist Anti-deportation Group Utrecht (AAGU) blocked the access to the detention center at Kamp Zeist in Soesterberg (see press release). A large number of construction companies could therefore not be working on the construction of the new prison for refugee families, the Closed Family Provision (GGV), on the terrain, Activists that had climbed on the high wall surrounding the detention center could, despite counter actions of the guards, make contact with imprisoned refugees. Using so-called lockons (steel tubes) activists chained themselves to the entrances to the detention center of Kamp Zeist. Arriving security guards and construction traffic could therefore not enter the terrain. After waiting some time employees of construction companies left empty-handed and did not go back to work this day. While traffic on the access roads to Kamp Zeist was piling up, two other activists managed to climb up the wall around Kamp Zeist. Although guards summoned the families and unaccompanied minors in the prison to stay inside and not to talk to the activists, there was occasional contact. An unaccompanied minor refugee from Zimbabwe was very upset and scared by 17 days of imprisonment. She was crying and told the activists a part of her story before she was told that she was not allowed to talk to them. Other incarcerated refugees held a piece of paper behind windows but infortunately the activists could not read it. When it became clear that the construction for the day was at a standstill, around noon the activists ended their blockade. The action is part of a AAGU campaign against the construction of the permanent family prison, which is supposed to replace the current temporary one, also within the walls of Kamp Zeist. In the first year since the opening of the temporary family prison, the state kept 128 children locked up in here, as was revealed by last weeks published answers by State Secretary Dijkhoff in response to parliamentary questions from the SP and GroenLinks. Of these children, 72 were deported. For AAGU it is paramount that refugees should not be locked up at all. People who leave their homes, fleeing war, violence, hunger, poverty, exploitation and / or suppression should be able to count on a warm reception. The activists will continue to resist borders and states and work towards an end to capitalism, which is the root cause of so much misery in this world that forces people to flee. |
